Rhinoplasty
About Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose for functional and aesthetic reasons, being one of the most commonly performed cosmetic operations. Open rhinoplasty uses a transcolumellar incision connecting marginal incisions, allowing full visualization of nasal anatomy. Closed endonasal rhinoplasty uses internal incisions without external scar, with faster recovery but limited exposure. The procedure involves reduction or augmentation of the nasal bridge dorsal hump reduction with osteotomies to close the open roof, refinement of the nasal tip suturing and trimming lower lateral cartilages, narrowing of the nasal base alar base reduction, and functional improvements septoplasty, turbinate reduction, spreader grafts for internal valve. Grafting materials include septal cartilage preferred, ear conchal cartilage, rib cartilage, and fascia. After surgery an external splint is worn briefly; bruising and swelling settle gradually, and subtle refinement of the shape continues for many months. Complications include asymmetry, over resection scooped or pinched appearance with some patients undergoing revision surgery, nasal obstruction, infection, and skin necrosis.
